PHOTO JOURNALISM ABOUT UNLUCKY FATES – WHEN SHALL I BE FREE?
Recording of over 100 unlucky monkeys during the period of 10 years working in the field of primate conservation in Central Vietnam and Central Highlands.
Vietnam has 6 species and sub-species of monkey, including stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides), northern pig-tailed macaque (Macaca leonina), rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), M. assamensis, long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) and the sub- species Con Dao long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis condorensis). All these species are protected under the Decree 32/2006 / ND-CP on the management of endangered, precious, and rare forest fauna and flora species, listed in Vietnam Red Book 2007 and IUCN, 2015. However, the conservation of these monkey species has not been received adequate attention; hunting, trapping, trafficking, and illegal uses of monkeys are taking place hourly throughout the whole country. Particularly the authorities have been indifferent to the captive monkeys in rural areas and treated as “permitted” that leads to a high risk of the extinction of Vietnam’s monkeys. In my opinion, the possibility of extinction of some monkey species can be faster than that of Vietnam’s langur species although the number of monkeys in the wild is larger than that of langurs. This is because of the lack of communities’ concern, restrictions of the enactment, and enforcement as well as insufficient investment in monkey conservation.

Within 10 years working in the field of primate conservation in Central and Central Highlands, I myself have witnessed more than 100 monkeys who were captive, illegally used, lack of caring conditions, and human respect. This photojournalism shows 10 unlucky monkeys with the unfortunate fate that I have seen in my life. To find out more information please see the following links:
