PROJECT SUMMARY AND INTRODUCTION OF PRODUCTS INDIGENOUS GINSENG TREE IN THE SANDY LANDS OF HAI NINH COMMUNE
On the morning of September 28th, 2023, the Quang Binh Women Development Fund (QBWDF) organized a workshop to summarize and introduce products of the Project “Planting of indigenous ginseng tree on sandy soil in Hai Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province” with the purpose of assessing impacts and drawing lessons in maintaining and replicating models aimed at protecting biodiversity and protecting the environment for sustainable development.
It is known that the project is one of nine proposals to receive financial support from the project “Establishing a funding foundation for biodiversity protection and environmental sustainability in Danang City, Vietnam” (in short, the “Conservation Fund” project) and Conservation Fund project is implemented by GreenViet (Vietnam), and Gustav-Stresemann-Institut (GSI, Germany).
Attending the Conference were Representatives of the European Union Delegation to Vietnam, the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang City, the Conservation Fund Project Management Board, Provincial and District level delegates, local government of Hai Ninh commune, and relevant delegates.
This project will be implemented from January 2023 – September 2023. Over the past 9 months, the Project Management Board has actively organized and implemented many activities, including: Introductory seminars, distribution of promotional fliers, training on indigenous ginseng tree plant growing techniques, and establishment of a women’s cooperative group to conserve indigenous ginseng trees. Up to now, in addition to 1,000 m2 of indigenous ginseng grown in nurseries and pilot gardens, there have been an additional 1,500 m2 of ginseng tree gardens grown according to organic standards in 9 households in the villages of Tan Dinh, Tan Hai, and Hien Trung, Cua Thon. Furthermore, the Project also supports seed collection and guidance on preparing sandy soil for the next crop with an area of 2,500 m2 to expand the area and increase land coverage density.
In her opening speech at the workshop, Ms. Do Thi Bich Thuy – Vice President of the QBWDF sent her sincere thanks to the Green Viet Biodiversity Conservation Center (GreenViet) for accompanying and supporting the Management Board in implementing this project. In particular, she emphasized the attention and support of the Provincial departments after 9 months for indigenous ginseng trees on the sandy land of Hai Ninh.
Mr. Le Thanh, Program Manager of the EUD said at the workshop: This is a project with many layers of significance in protecting ecological diversity, adapting to climate change and natural disaster impacts on Quang Binh province. In particular, coastal land is where the waves and winds are greatly affected by climate change.
In the European Union, we also have very clear and specific policies that are applied throughout the territory of the 27 EU member countries. For example, the European Green Deal Policy (Green Deal) considered a system of guidelines that European member countries are forced to implement in the fields of ecological diversity conservation, anti-deforestation, and organic agricultural practices to adapt to climate change. Besides, we also have another large and mandatory policy which is the EU’s gender action plan. Among them, one of the extremely important priorities is “Promoting Economic Empowerment of Women” from the dual Green-Digital Transition process of Vietnam.
As a sponsor, we would like to see our small contributions to create greater changes in the commercialization of this product in the general policy of the province that promotes local tourism as well as spreading skillful integration of activities to enhance women’s economic empowerment in the locality.
At the workshop, delegates spent a lot of time discussing, exchanging and sharing experiences during the project implementation process. At the same time, propose plans to maintain and sustainably develop ginseng trees; create many products from valuable ginseng trees; At the same time, create jobs and improve livelihoods for people in coastal areas…
Here, the Project Management Board signed a commitment to consume products between the Women’s Cooperative Group for the Conservation of indigenous ginseng trees and partner units (the Kieu Cat Handicraft Facility.)
