WILDLIFE RESCUE SKILLS TRAINING AT QUANG NGAI PROVINCE

On November 12, GreenViet Center, in collaboration with the Quang Ngai Forest Protection Department, organized a training session on wildlife rescue skills at the local level. The session was attended by 30 participants, including forest rangers, staff from the Provincial Protection Forest Management Board, and four members from Ba To Forestry Company and Ba To Forestry Enterprise.

Equipping individuals with knowledge and skills in wildlife and wildlife rescue plays a crucial role in minimizing the number of wildlife fatalities before they are transferred to rescue centers or released back into the wild.

The training was conducted by conservation experts from GreenViet and wildlife rescue specialists from the Endangered Primate Rescue Center at Cuc Phuong National Park. The content of the training included:

  • Guidance on identifying endangered and rare species found in Quang Ngai.
  • Techniques for capturing wildlife in rescue situations and the use of support tools.
  • Instructions on temporary housing and care for animals after capture.
  • Techniques for providing first aid, medical care, and rehabilitation for different groups of rescued wildlife.

Quang Ngai is home to many rare and endangered species listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List. Notable species include: Grey-shanked douc langur, Southern white-cheeked gibbon, Pygmy slow loris, Rhesus macaque, Stump-tailed macaque, Pig-tailed macaque (Primates); Javan pangolin (Pangolins); Common palm civet (Carnivores); longated tortoise, Bourret’s box turtle, Vietnamese pond turtle, Indochinese box turtle (Turtles); Burmese python, Reticulated python (Reptiles).

MSc. Do Dang Khoa, a wildlife rescue expert from Cuc Phuong National Park, conducted a session on wildlife rescue skills during the training program.

At the training, MSc. Hoang Quoc Huy, Deputy Director of GreenViet, presented visual materials and highlighted morphological characteristics and conservation classifications to help participants identify and assess the urgency of protecting specific wildlife species. This enabled specialists to respond effectively to cases of wildlife violations.

Additionally, MSc. Do Dang Khoa, a wildlife rescue expert from Cuc Phuong National Park, guided participants through techniques for capturing animals in need of rescue, as well as providing first aid, care, and rehabilitation tailored to different species groups.

Equipping forest rangers and protection forest management staff with knowledge about wildlife and rescue techniques is crucial for minimizing wildlife mortality before animals are transferred to rescue centers or released back into the wild in Quang Ngai.
